I have found that to lose weight and feel good about myself, I needed to cut sugar by 80% and reduce carbs by 50%. The sugar that remains is mainly the added sugar in bran cereals. I'm ok with that as I find that this level of sugar doesn't trigger cravings. As for carbs, I'll never give these up because I would be very miserable otherwise. I don't like meat/fish much and don't really like butter and cheese. I've been through this before and realise that I would be very limited in what I enjoy eating if I adhered to this.

Also, I do a lot of intense sport and carbs are good for that purpose. I have found that to lose 1/2 a stone all I need to do is give up cakes/chocolate/biscuits and have bread only at week-ends. This is enough to lose that amount of weight usually within 2 months.

My "trick" with food when I was actively trying to lose weight was to see it in the shops and actively think to myself "THAT will STILL be there and for sale when I've lost the weight; I will always be able to buy that. There's no shortage. Leave it now .... " and then walk away.

Not sure if that'll help ... but you have to acknowledge food exists - and you have to "give yourself a talking to" - and the bottom line is that whatever you are looking it won't disappear forever... you can buy it another day, just not today. You can't simply ignore it. Acknowledge it's there, say "bye bye" to it and turn your back on it and walk away.

On Friday I bought my favourite chocolate sweeties .... ate the s0ddin' lot!! I was in the same shop on Saturday and went to their aisle thinking "choccies, choccies, choccies". They were there.... and I gave myself a talking to and walked away without them; I told myself "You had those yesterday and ate THE LOT; if you buy these you'll do the same. You don't need them". I sometimes also add to myself "You don't need them biffer, give it a break ...."
  • I just focus on part/s of my body I hate - at the mo it's top of the arms. So I try and look at these before I lose the plot.

Realise I can eat well for 3 weeks but gorge 1 week of the month because I'm of the female gender and can't stop what goes on each month.

Buy controlled potions. Making yourself busy. Are my tips. Though I'd like to break the cycle of not eating when TV is on, I suppose it can be done. I did the dry Jan for Alchol and that really helped - never consumed same level as I used to since.

Don't beat yourself Dad had the best diet meat and veg every day, didn't stop cancer of the bowl no matter sadly how much the Saint eater.

My mum is exactly like OP...she buys, cooks and eats really healthy stuff but if she buys a pack of biscuits, chocolate bars or doughnuts, she has to eat the whole lot in a day. It's a strange phenomenon, I have never been like this, my Easter egg will last over a month but hers is gone in a day or two at the most.

My husband thinks I am a horrible daughter but I never buy my mum any chocolates and when we're out shopping, I physically drag her away from the cream cakes if I have to. Ever since she called me once with a severe migraine and nausea, I managed to drag out a confession from her which involved a whole box of After Eights (which I had bought for her just before Christmas!) so enough was enough, if she whinges in the supermarket, I always remind her of that!

It's definitely a trait in some people though, she started buying those Nescafe latte sachets and after a couple of weeks, she was drinking 4 or 5 each day. We only found out when she was again complaining of migraine attacks and palpatations during the night. She'd replaced her sweet cravings for caffeine...we've managed to wean her off of those for now!

Luckily, she's never been a drinker, smoker or gambler......:o

Have you tried going for a brisk walk or a run when the cravings start? (Cycling makes me hungry.)
Often I find I am in control afterwards....and if not, at least I have burnt a few calories.
    CBT....can be very helpful.
  • Thank you everybody for the tips - have decided that May 1st (this year!) is my D-Day for starting serious healthier eating, having just 'tickled my ears' in all honesty up to now.

I am a woman of a certain age and have been an emotional eater since I was 9 years old. Tried lots of different techniques and books, but am in the middle of a CBT based book called The Diet Trap Solution by Judith Beck and Deborah Beck Busis. Have found it very useful for tackling the psychological aspects of overeating. Still not totally cured, but it's a long journey.
I have found that by having a pudding or something sweet in the evening I can hold off throughout the day. Not denying yourself is very useful because if you are a rebel like me you will want rebel against it anyway.
    Good Luck

OP, I can relate so much to your post, it's like you have written about me. Every day I am giving up but by midday I'm craving sugar and junk and before I know it I am buying it.
