I've been refused No Claims Discount protection

It seems like I might have to stick with my current insurer for the next year, shame I wasn't impressed how they handled my claim, I was wanting to move.
I didn't ask, iammumtoone. They would accept me as a new customer; they just wouldn't allow me to protect my no claims discount. As an existing customer there isn't a problem. I rarely stay with the same insurance company for more than a year as there's usually a cheaper quote somewhere else, but I may find that this claim causes problems if I try to change. My homework is to shop around and find out what other companies say. I'll report back!0 -
When you get an online quote, they ask, was the NCD protected?
It's a confusing question, as I had an accident in 2015, when it was protected, so it didn't go down. The two subsequent policies were not protected, with no claims either.
Obviously I declared the 2015 accident, as it was within three years, but I declared the NCD as not protected, because it hadn't been for two years. Potentially they could use it as an excuse to deny claim by saying I should have declared the NCD was protected.
Also, it sounds like they intend to disregard the 9 year NCD in applying any discount, if the NCD was protected, so what is the point of paying extra to protect the NCD at all? I tried using different NCDs, and the higher numbers seem to make no difference to the quote anyway.0 -
Okay, the first company I investigated had this information on their website:
If you have a minimum of four years no claim discount (NCD) with no more than one claim in the past three years, then you're eligible for our protected no claim discount.
This means that your NCD will not be affected by- One claim made during the current period of cover, or
- Two claims arising in the three previous years.
I think the answer is to check with individual companies as policies obviously differ.0
