Please help I am going round in circles!!!! I am hosting a small charity event in mid-october, it is being held at a local scouts building. There will be about ten stalls varying from crafts to face painting and the obligatory tea and coffee sale. The event is open to the public. Nobody seems to be able to tell me if as the organiser we need PLI, or if each individual stall holers needs to get it or if it's for charity we need any at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If it's needed and hugely expensive we won't be able to go ahead.

Neither you nor the individual stall holders are legally required to have it, though the scout hut might make it a condition of lending you the room that you do. It might also be peace of mind for you to get it in case a face painter stabs someone in the eye and you end up getting sued or something...

You, as the organiser, can take out a "one-off" PL policy for the event as a whole or if you have more than 3 a year you can have an annually renewable policy.
A company called www.events-insurance.co.uk specialise in this and you can go direct to them or via a broker (same price either way - the broker might give you a bit of advice re alternatives or help you fill in the form etc.). Premiums aren't too hefty and vary depending on the anticipated number of guests.
