your dashcam continued recording with the engine off?? which one did you have?

Some cars have a constant live to the cigarette lighter / aux socket so even when the engine is off and key is out, power will still go to the dashcam..

You can get many models that will run off a battery or take a continuous feed from the engine. Some advanced ones even have motion sensors so they switch on and record when someone moves in front

  • It depends how the OP fitted his dash cam if he risks draining his battery.

"Parkcam" mode has been around a while seems pretty useful given many dents happen when you are not in your parked car. As proven.

Dash cams use relatively little power especially in a sleep mode - in many cases without something like motion detection to stop/start you would find a 64gb card would be overwritten (in 8-9 hours) long before the battery drained - anecdotally from dashcam forums I have seen 1.5 - 2 days use without the car being started but you can also get some cameras that will shut off after x number of hours if you so wish. Certainly parking in a public place where you use your car daily should be fine.

    There are options though -

    1) A hardwire with battery voltage cut-off - saves the battery dropping below a certain voltage
    2) Hardwire for motion detection so camera sleeps unless it sees something (so limited battery drain) then records for 2-3m and goes back to sleep hopefully covering you if someone hits the car and legs it
    3) Independent dash cam battery which can provide up to a day's run time on one charge
