Have read that Toshiba ought to fail:

It raised an interesting point that the Japanese not allowing companies to fail could be partly why they have such a naff stock index history. I hope it's all down to different culture and demographics?, so we hopefully don't get lost decades too? As that is a fear of mine

Haven't we already lost nearly two decades?0 -
Different culture and demographics?
Lloyds
NR
RBS
Bradford and Bingley
etc
etc0 -
Are big banks a special specialcase maybe? Since it'd be very disruptive to transactions if they went, and the cost to fscs could potentially be more? And also if the company is profitable with a cash flow problem it wouldn't be a zombie, it sounds like Japan has been bailing out unprofitable companies as wellThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. I imagine that you could have expressed a financial or economic opinion without resorting to cheap racism.0 -
Calling them japs? No more offensive than calling us Brits?
And different culture as in consumer saving/ spending culture and the culture to bail out.
I hope they are different so we don't face lost decades hereThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I can't speak to the use of Brits. Perhaps it will mean something different after Brexit and Scexit.
Anyway, Japan has officially complained about the use of 'jap' in the UK. I trust the mods will delete your post.
"Most Japanese people find the word Jap offensive, irrespective of the circumstances in which it is used."

They would only find it offensive if they thought there was something wrong with being one, as you say people might now think bad of being a "Brit" but that's where the real racism lies - in being ashamed of being something, of thinking that there's something wrong with it
I only used it as a pall-y nickname for lack of any other nickname for them, i see nothing wrong with being oneThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

What do you call Pakistanis?0 -
I see no problem with abbreviation of any nationality, it doesn't automatically mean hate, just convenience. Saying it is derogatory to be called something - that is racist.
Today's Japanese generation aren't the same people who were in ww2, and the government isn't the same, so they should feel no shame at being called Japanese or any abbreviation of such. As with the Nazis, there were obviously some evil ones but also others who were just following orders and who didn't necessarily agree with their regime, you have to judge on a case by case basis, so i don't tarnish an entire population or even generationThis is a system account and does not represent a real person.
