USB HD Died

My Iomega500gb USB HD has died. It comes up with disc corrupted or unreadable.
While I do double back up this has happened when tranferring from laptop to another and they are off the first and not on the new one yet
I dont think it is 12 months old yet, but if I just go down that route the replacement will be empty. I would like to try to recover this. Any hope?
Thanks
DG

Is there a possibility it is the usb link that is not working? and this if the hdd is connected via the ribbon cable direct into a pc that the disk may be recoverable? IYKWIM?
