    The DAB pips issue is potentially fixable, or at least improvable. Move the studio time and pips to an earlier moment, using the average delay across major DAB brands as a guide. Then add the delay back for FM/AM. This would bring the pips back to an accuracy of a fraction of a second on DAB.

    Similar technique could be used for TV, with satellite being the most inaccurate at the moment. I'm surprised the BBC haven't already thought of this.

    So - is terrestrial TV time signal correct ?

    No. Terrestrial TV is digitally encoded. The encoding and decoding processes take a significant amount of time.

    Possible. But when you start intentionally delaying a reference time then it ceases to be a reference.
    At the moment you can guarantee that the pips on FM/AM are accurate for normal use. If you start playing a out with them then they can no longer be considered a trusted source.

    "Extra" (as a prefix) means beyond or outside.

    Extraterrestrial = outside/beyond Earth
    Extrajudicial = outside the judicial (legal) system
    Extracurricular = outside the curriculum
    Extraordinary = outside the ordinary

    etc.

  • The time signals from the BBC aren't broadcast with any degree of accuracy, as others mentioned there are delays due to digital processing which make the broadcast of pips hit and miss.

    Those with analogue communications receivers can listen to the one second and minute pips directly from MSF on 60 KHz and those from the Russian station RWM on 4996 and 9996 KHz, the RWM schedule is listed at:
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/RWM

    The better radio controlled clocks and some mobile phones with GPS match their display exactly in synch with the ticks of MSF and RWM.
