UKPC charge - should I appeal?

Hi all,
Appreciate there is a lot of information on here about appealing parking charges but after some advice on my specific situation please?!
We received a £100 parking charge today for 'parking after the expiry of paid for time in a pay and display bay'....this in itself is confusing to me for the below reasons.
My husband dropped me and the kids at the train station whilst he parked the car across the road. I had his wallet to buy the train tickets, he had a handful of change for the parking.
He noticed signage in the car park, and on the parking meters, saying that payment should be made over the phone. He was unable to do this as he didn't have his wallet! He thought he would try the meter anyway before abandoning altogether. He paid for a full days parking, and the meter issued a ticket (valid until 23:59 the same day) which he displayed prominently on the dashboard. We returned to the car at approx. 16:00 to find a parking charge as mentioned above.
My question is this.... although I accept we did not pay for the parking by the prescribed method, we did pay into a machine that presumably is maintained by UKPC, so how could they claim to be out of pocket? Also, even though there was signage on the pay and display machines, the coin slot, ticket deposit slot etc were all still easily accessible on the machine, and the machine issuing what appeared to be a valid ticket.
Also, due to the wording on the ticket 'parking after the expiry of paid for time' this appears to acknowledge that we have PAID FOR TIME.
Is this actually worth appealing, or do you think that its a lost cause?
Would really appreciate your advice.

do you think that its a lost cause?
Never.
That's why the prescribed method in the NEWBIES thread says appeal as keeper on day 26, saying nothing much (if anything) about what happened. The NEWBIES thread does not say some PCNs are a lost cause, because none are. The details do not matter too much.
The appellant could attach the P&D ticket as well when doing the online appeal but do NOT identify the driver (be careful, the UKPC appeals page defaults to 'driver' and slips back to that again if you alter the wording in the appeals box...!).
And DON'T do it yet! Day 26 (the reason for the deliberate delay) is explained there.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
