Moving US shares held by US brokerage to UK

My OH holds shares of 3 different companies with a US brokerage (accumulated through stock options and salary sacrifice through employment). We want to sell quite a few (so much money kept in 3 companies is far too risky) for which I have a clear plan (sell shares, use currency broker to wire money over to the UK) though I feel a bit nervous over timing regarding share price and exchange rate but we will just have to do it (can't time the market and all that)

OH wants to keep some shares but I would like to hold them on a UK platform if possible. Obviously selling, transferring USD to GBP and rebuying makes no sense so is there a way of transferring the shares from a US brokerage to the UK? Do both of the accounts have to be in OH name or could he transfer them to my account in the UK? (He is a non-uk tax payer and non-UK resident so opening his own account might be tricky) How would we settle CGT liabilities (I guess he would through his tax return and for me it would simply be a gift between husband and wife) and finally what are the typical costs involved in such a share transfer between platforms in different countries (if possible at all)

I appreciate this is rather complicated and would greatly value any input-thanks!

Sounds like a whole lot of hassle for little benefit, what would you gain? Why not just keep what's left after selling some, where they are ?

Ask your US broker if they have a London office, or have any suggestions.

Although I suspect that what you want to do will not be possible (because US financial laws are very different from those found elsewhere in the world).

You are of course right! I'm trying to streamline the family finances and liked the idea of having everything in one place so we don't loose the overview but on reflection that would probably complicate rather than simplify things- thanks for stating the obvious and talking sense... woods trees etc
