Problems with business insurance on motor policy

I recently changed jobs and have to use my car for work.
When I checked on my policy, I wasn't covered for business use so I called my provider (Tesco) to get this amended.

After going to through all of the questions, I was told that this had been declined for cover by the under writer because of the job my husband does, he's a named driver on my policy and he's a motor mechanic.

This isn't the first time this has happened, but something inside me has snapped now.

When I complete the standard questions on job and sector for my husband, I only have the option to class him as working I the motor trade. This is what sets alarms bells ringing with providers, but it isn't accurate. He doesn't trade in motors, he fixes them. But I don't have any option to put this under a separate category which I feel is unfair. We are being penalised for an outdated overly rigid system.

I want to take this to the ombudsman because I feel we are being treated unfairly.

Does anyone have any thoughts or experience of this?

Sorry if I'm missing the point, but you want to go to the Ombudsman, to complain about an insurers right to choose what risks they insure?

Change insurer or don't add your partner if you want business cover.

He works in the motor trade. This isn't attractive to a lot of insurers. Try others.

To get this to the FOS then you first need to complain to Tesco that you feel they are treating you unfairly.

Follow their complaints procedure set out in the policy docs.

Then if you are unhappy with their reply (or they ignore you for 8 weeks) you can escalate to the FOS for their adjudication at no cost to you.

Being in the motor trade could mean there is a dispute on whose insurance covers the car.

There maybe a one off can you pop to the shop and collect a part. Whose policy is liable? Will the company have cover for his car whilst being used for their purposes? I worked for a company that did cover your car on their policy if running errands. But over the years that got dropped. Change of policy terms or cost cutting who knows?

Mechanic is on most insurance applications. Still one to have to shop around for, even if only part time.

Try getting cover whilst having a trade policy also. ouch!!
