Wallpaper jointing?

I'm looking for ideas/suggestions, about my living room, which I'm about to wallpaper.

The room is as per the attached sketch.

and I'm decorating it with this paper.

My problem is, none of the doors, nor the window, reaches to the ceiling, meaning there's no natural break in the wallpaper, and, of course, the odds of the paper matching perfectly, edge to edge, is a million to one.

I've had two ideas so far.

1. Join up in the right hand corner of the alcove (labeled A in red), and hope the mismatch isn't too noticeable.

2. Paper the back wall of the alcove (it's approx 31" wide), with a different, possibly plain colour, paper.

Opinions, or other ideas, are very much welcome.

  • I am afraid hang the expense my slight OCD with decorating issues means I would have to match the wallpaper:(

  • But how would you go about matching the wallpaper?

Wallpaper seems to be creeping back into fashion, just after I finally got rid of all traces of it in our house.:)
But the same paper all the way round all the walls? Are they not suitable for painting? I know it's a personal choice, but it would drive me crazy as much as putting it up!
Why not paint the back of the alcove to provide a break, or is there a floor to ceiling unit going somewhere that could mask the final mis-matched joint?

I hate painting with a passion, and avoid it whenever possible.

    Sadly no.

The alcove is where my computer desk is.

There's nothing in the room, that goes from floor to ceiling.

I've already bought the paper. :(

I'd need two, or more likely three, rolls of the new paper (depending on the pattern repeat), and would have three to four rolls left over, of the stuff I've already got.

Start at * and work round the room (clockwise) until you get to the other side of the alcove. If it's clear that the pattern won't match, then paint the back of the alcove in a plain, toning colour. If you take a swatch of the paper to someone who does paint matching (ie, dulux) then you should be able to get the same colour as the background of your paper.

You may hate painting, but it would be a really little job!

Maybe I could avoid the painting, by buying one roll of a single colour wallpaper, and papering the back of the alcove with that?

Even B&Q offer a colour matching service, and as stated, it's a small job with water based paint, so cleaning up is easy. Paint before you paper and you don't have to worry about being neat at the sides, just the ceiling (papered presumably) and skirting board. :)
You are presumably a dab hand at papering, so know the best place to start. Give me a paintbrush and roller any day, over battling with lengths of freshly pasted paper!
But plain paper in the alcove would eliminate a mis-aligned join. ;)
