    Hse site says this

Work on any type of asbestos can be dangerous. However, some short duration work (less than 1 hour for 1 person in a 7 day period, not to exceed 2 hours spent by all workers) for small or minor tasks on AIB can be carried out by non-licensed workers who are appropriately trained.

Short duration work to remove AIB as part of demolition or major refurbishment would be notifiable.

Any work lasting more than 1 hour for 1 person in a 7 day period, or more than 2 hours by all workers would require a licensed contractor.

How much needs coming down, will it take more then 2hrs to remove

The work will take us more than 2 hours because of it's location and fixing. I've done asbestos awareness training at work, so I'm aware of HSE legislations, and I've done much Googling.

brightontraveller - unless you've had experience of having AIB removed and you're willing to share, then you are indeed wasting time. I haven't asked for an opinion on my AIB. I know what it is, and I know that we need a licensed contractor.

    and the asbestos is friable,
    I wouldn't recommend frying asbestos :)

Was asbestos ever used in plaster, particularly when applied to laths in Edwardian times?

Very very unlikely in lathe and plaster wall covering assuming original to era you ask? Really remote chance of anthrax (bovine hair used), arsenic, lead poisoning (worker comp act 1906 should have stopped it but cases went on until beginning ww2)
The boom times in construction for asbestos were 50s to late 1980s sheet, board, insulation added to “plaster” etc but if unsure always get it tested...

I have not offered an opinion on your AIB? , With regard removal as you don't understand or see the importance of information no point,
googling tends to work better if you know the answer to start with :rotfl:
