development proposals - neighbouring properties search

Hello
My solicitor offers the above as an additional service at extra charge as a part of conveyancing. They offer to look at planning applications and development plans within 500m of the property. Apparently Standard Local Authority Searches focus only on a single property, which is the one I am buying but nothing about surrounding properties.
It sounds like a good idea just to be on a safe side but I was wondering if it is something I could do myself. I am able to check planning applications on my borough's website but it requires full postcode, so very limited.
Is there a better way of doing this or I have no choice and need to pay my solicitor?

How many postcodes would you actually want to search against, bearing in mind each typically covers a dozen or so properties?0

Some local authorities have a mapping system which makes it easier to find applications. Take a look.0

Yup. What cash-cows said. You can do a map search centred on your postcode on the council website.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Silly me, I could not see it as I am usually using Firefox and map was inactive but as soon as I used Internet Explorer was able to activate search on the map. Many thanks for the advice.0
