Hi all
As Hull is the City of Culture (and because i found a really good hotel and food deal) we are going to Hull on Easter Monday for 2 nights. So we have 3 days to fill with Hull stuff...
So we are 2 adults and 2 kids age 12 and 13..... kids will tolerate history / science / art / educational stuff... as long as we bribe them with a good meal at the end of the day..
any recommendations for things to do?
We have never been to Hull before so want to do "normal" stuff as well as City of Culture special installations.
I think someone told me the Hull streetlife (?) museum is good - has anyone been?
I see that there is a Cargo ARt installation at The Deep that looks interesting....
can anyone recommend anything else?
We have evening meal for the first night included in our hotel package - but can anyone recommend somewhere to eat on the second night? My kids like Chinese or other oriental food so any recommendations for that would be good? or anything else??
We all HATE shopping so not looking for recommendations for markets or shops - but art galleries / museums/anything unusual we can do?
edited to add - in terms of the unusual i found this sound / art installation thing on at the bridge - it's sold out when we are there but might be interesting for others who go in may https://www.hull2017.co.uk/whatson/events/the-height-of-the-reeds-a-sound-journey-for-the-humber-bridge/
I found this other thread on Hull - but wondered if anyone had any other suggestions..https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5616929
I will update this thread when we get back to let people what we found and what i recommend that is worth seeing...

Hey,
Local lad here. All the museums are pretty good - streetlife, Wilberforce and Hull and East Riding are all in the same spot in the old town and worth checking out. All free so nothing to lose. The Maritime museum is fab too, that's also where the poppy installation is.
Definitely pay the Ferens a visit, it's a fantastic gallery. As is the Humber Street Gallery near the marina - do check what's on there as some of it is very much for adults(!). Lots going on near the marina and fruit market, lots of good cafes and places to grab a bite to eat. And a stone throw from there is the Deep - entry price is pretty steep but it's a fabulous aquarium.
I know you don't like shops but I would say you'd like the joke shop in Watmough's Arcade - chances are you'll be wandering around nearby so go have a look there. It's a weird place, always been there and people are strangely fond of it! And just around the corner from there is the smallest window in England... Or something like that - use google for that.
Absolutely fantastic Chinese food can be found at a place called Yinjibar. A small unassuming restaurant which serves the best Chinese you'll find. The satay is amazing for those looking to stay near the usual, those looking for something more authentic will not be disappointed. Thai House is good for.. Well, Thai food.
Enjoy your stay and ask anyone when you're here for tips on what to do and where to go - you won't find many not chomping at the bit to share their favourite part of the city/cultural offer with you!0 -
We visited recently to see the blade. Had a fun weekend - I'm sure you'll fill your time. We went to the Ferens to see Francis Bacon's Screaming Popes - nice cafe there too. We'd already done the Maritime and the Streetlife museum on a previous visit so gave them a miss but would recommend both.
This installation in the flats looked pretty cool at night

We wanted to visit Spurn point on the Sunday but the weather was a bit grim so we didn't in the end. Maybe a bit far out though?
We stumbled across Pearson Park which has a Victorian style conservatory with lizards and tropical fish in which was suitably quirky.

Best value for money was crossing the Humber Bridge - just an amazing structure. I'd like to walk it but time didn't really permit.
Another quirky one - I'd have liked to have gone on the scale Bridge when it was opening but couldn't quite work out times. Perhaps a local would know?

We went to the restaurant at the Deep but you might struggle to book now

I wouldn't recommend based on our last visit though. Was lovely the first time we went however.0 -
Another restaurant recommendation

We enjoyed a meal here last year - friendly place and good food. It may be worth booking - we were lucky to get in on a weekday night out of season.0 -
thanks everyone _ i am going to spend this evening planning out the itinary for the 3 days.... I need to look on a google maps and see where everything is.
What's parking like in Hull City centre?
We are staying a little bit out of the centre and will drive into the centre on Monday before going to the Hull in the evening for our meal...
But the other days i think we will get the bus in...
