Picasa question.

I have a Desktop PC and the HD is making a noise and on occasions, say 1 in 4, refuses to boot up. As the PC is now over 8 years old, it is time to change it. I'm buying a refurb with Windows 10. Nothing fancy as I use a PC for surfing, sending emails and a newsletter to a group. My main concern is what happens to my 1000 and more photos in my Picasa 'account'?

I opened a Flickr account and a lot of my photos are safely in there. But not all the photos from my Picasa are in the Flickr. Nearly all the photos are of my family, parents (long gone) children and grandchildren. Precious to me.

If I buy a Hard Drive holder, if called that, put my old hd into it, would I still be able to use it, if it opens up, and keep the Picasa account open?

I need to be honest here as I don't know, are the photos in Picasa in the cloud or are they just somewhere on my hard drive? (Daft question, I know)

The grandchildren clubbed together and got me an iPad mini the Christmas of 2015 and I have Google photos on there. Could I transfer the photos on Picasa to that? If yes, does it have to be one at a time?

Appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Google has retired Picasa. It probably will still work but no updates and the day when it doesn't will come.
Yes you can switch to Google and also you do not have to move photos one at a time.

This page may give you some help https://picasa.google.co.uk/

    It says

Where can I find my photos?
If you have photos or videos in a Picasa Web Album, the easiest way to still access, modify and share most of that content is to log in to Google Photos. Your photos and videos will already be there.

i have Picasa 3 and its still working although its not updated anymore.
Its really just an index system for the pics held on ur hard drive.

In Picasa you can still sync to web and they will upload to your GOOGLE PHOTOS (used to be called Picasa web album)acccount in the cloud. Put them in a folder in Picasa and Sync many at the same time

There is a button 'SYNC to WEB'

    Did some last week!

When uploaded to Google photos they will appear on ipad

if your hard drive is only booting 1 in 4 times the chances are it will do the same if you install it in a caddy.

if you originally installed picasa on that pc it would have found the photos on the pc.

google photos is the way forward. you may find that all your photos are already uploaded. if not can you boot pc connect a flash drive to copy photos to?

Thank you. For some reason, only a fraction of the photos in Picasa, are now in my Google photos account.

I'm grateful to all above for the info and advice.

Well you have to upload them as I stated in my post 4 above, they will not go up automatically

Ah! I assumed the opposite but I reread your post and will now go that 'route'. Thanks again.

    Picasa sync should work

    But this is another way

Download google photos uploader to your desktop PC

That will find all pics on computer and put a copy up automatically to 'Google Photos'

I'll second the Google photos route....Anything I put in my Pictures folder gets uploaded automatically, so, a nice second layer to my backups.
