I think A and E gets busier at bank holiday anyway. 2 Easters ago I crushed my finger between a fence panel and concrete post; the radiographer said they'd been really busy but hadn't twigged how many people would be using the long weekend for DIY.
Our walk-in centre had been shut down and the minor injuries wasn't open, otherwise I'm sure they could've delt with it.
I follow the nurses advise ever since then; sunny bank holidays are meant for beer gardens!

I've never heard anything bad about ringing 111.

My local A&E dept have told me to ignore their [111] advice in future after 111 told me to travel a 90 minute journey to a minor injuries clinic with a broken wrist. I didn't go as the clinic didn't have an x-ray facility.

I called 111 when my boy was a baby (not newborn, but under 1) he had a v high temperature that hadn't come down with regular meds - middle of the night and so on. They advised combining ibuprofen so did that. Then his temperature dropped quite alarmingly.

I called them back and they suggested he have a hot bath and a hot drink!

    Never used them since...

Last year I went to A&E for a suspected broken bone, there were people in there for colds. For goodness sake! Rest, fluids and on the shelf painkillers is needed. Unless they were coughing up blood or other serious things, then don't clog up the service. I'm surprised the staff didn't ask them to clear off.

I'm kind of baffled by this. Surely colds are common enough that no one wants to spend several hours waiting at A&E to be seen, only to be told to go home and rest? Feel like there must be something else going on...

There has to be a certain amount of pharmacies open in an area during bank holidays as an NHS requirement, they have to apply to be able to close. If you happen to have not opted out of it, you ll have a summary care record which as long as they ve got their privacy officers in that can access parts of your record, even if not if you can give them a list of your medication I m sure another pharmacist can help you if not a walk in centre :)

My comment is mainly about the long holiday closure, which surprised me (not being a regular surgery visitor), the mention of pharmacy being incidental (ie explaining why I called). supermarket pharmacies cover most of the holiday, anyway.

A general pharmacist would not have been able to advise me, anyway, even with records. I am changing over between two drugs and need permission to downgrade should the next higher dose of the new one be a problem (luckily not the case). Our GPs' pharmacist takes surgeries and can act on their behalf. (Hence my surprise that he wasn't on duty on a usual workday.)

Our area has 3 pharmacies attached to gp surgeries, all closed until Tuesday.

Also, teddysmum, not everyone is lucky enough to be married to a nurse :)

Makes me wonder why the NHS don't locate walk-in centres in the same place as A&E departments. Go in, see the triage nurse, get sent one way or the other depending on your severity.

Leicester Royal Infirmary has the walk in centre next to a&e. Separate entrances. Though being rebuilt so unsure if a combined entrance is on the plans.

I would include a trapdoor for anyone coming in for a cold they had for 2-3 days. Below trapdoor is a pool of sharks.
