Exactly the wrong attitude, a cars value should not be a factor in how much you spend on maintenance......
Exactly. Time and again I hear people say that a repair quote is more than the car is worth so they scrap the car and spend a couple of grand on an unknown quantity instead.

You do realise he got a £700 banger?
Banger? The fact that I got it for an extremely good price doesn't make it a banger. It's a comfortable and luxury car for my standards. I'm more than happy with it and let me tell you, its far more comfortable with more toys than many brand new eco boxes

Have the valve check done for the reasons given above. Doesn't matter how old it is, or what it cost, if it's in decent nick, and you intend to keep it for a while then maintenance is far cheaper than repairs!

Yes, you even titled your thread claiming so. You've got a terrible memory on every one of your AE's.

Do it yourself, If you know how to use a spanner you can do the valves. Get a new gasket, service manual, and some feeler gauges and your good to go.

Avoid it, then it will cost you more to fix replacing burnt valves etc..
