I used to go running 3 times a week, plus at least 2 fitness/work outs. I also used to do loads of walking. I have a bike, but the roads aren't safe enough near me.
I'm going to start going to the gym and running again.
New forum. New sig. Yes I still need to lose 2 stone!

I wasn't being flippant with the question " Your definition of "fit and healthy?" is ?". It is a genuine Q.
Me, I ride a bike (a lot). Tried running and the gym but not for me.All though I am getting old now, 49 years so the days of competitive cycling are probably behind me. The last time I was in the lab my stats where
    VO2Max 71 ml/min/kg
    LT threshold 87% of max
    HR at rest 27 bpm
    BMI 20
    9% Body fat.

Two British championship's wins and a place to place record to my name for time trailing and a 1st cat road man.
  • I've got two personal trainers, one for each foot.
  • I was a middle distance runner in my teens, 15 min 5k, under 2 for 800, all when I was 15-16, but university saw the introduction of birds and beer in my life and that was that. Now I do mountain biking and enjoy nothing more than carrying my bike up a munro or 3 and riding it down, trying not to fall off.

Wow! There are some really fit people in this group - some impressive stats here!

What's interesting to me is the correlation between level of fitness and (for want of a better word) 'success' in life. Maybe it's improved focus, health, energy levels, productivity etc, but generally the fitter people are the high achieving in life they seem to be.

Do you think this correlates with your own experiences? When you're fitter do you feel you do better in life generally?

I have to keep fit for my job and they provide a gym & time to use it in work so I generally go a couple of times a week to use the cross trainer & free weights.

If I didn't have these facilities, I've got a fairly healthy lifestyle anyway eg. dog walking, walking to the shops instead of driving etc. and would never pay for a gym or trainer.

Like bertiewhite, I have a job that requires a level of fitness to keep my specialisms. Unlike bertie we have no gym at work and no work time allocated to maintain that fitness. :/

I was never sporty when I was younger. If anything I was overweight as a child and teenager, and did no exercise. I started running in my mid 20s, to keep weight off and to keep fit. Now I cycle and run. At the moment I'm cycling on average 220 miles per week and running about 10 miles per week. I don't do gym work, because I'm not desperate to build upper body strength and weight. I do mess around with some barbells at home, and do some sit ups and press ups.

My cycling FTP (Functional Threshold Power) is 295 watts which is about 4.9 watts/kg power/weight ratio, which allows me to maintain a decent cycling pace. I don't race, other than on online gaming apps like Zwift.

I'm a steady runner, not quick, but no slouch. My fastest 5k parkrun this year is 19mins 40 secs.

For me, fitness has a direct correlation with happiness and sense of personal self worth. I've never been particularly ambitious, other than to ensure my family are comfortable and have opportunities.

Keeping fit and active, especially as you get older (I'll be 60 in June) means that you don't have to limit your options. My retirement present for next year is a 10 day cycling holiday with a friend in the Italian Alps. Bring it on! Fitness is a precious gift.
Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.

In my late fifties now, and used to compete at cycling, badminton, running, cricket, tennis and football in my younger years. I now go five times a week to the gym, spending an hour there, mixing cardio, resistance and weights, starting off with a warm up (dynamic stretches), doing the main work then stretching out at the end.
I used to be a 3 hour marathoner, and could do 2500 metres on a Cyclops rower in 8 minutes 35 seconds, but those days are long gone.
I qualified as a level 2 fitness instructor last year - something I am very proud of.
