The bus routes do change each year depending on demand. It might be that the bus route could change this yesr and if closer we had a discussion today that little one said he wouldn't mind waiting at home for me. By the time he has a snack / feed the cat / get changed I'd be there. Maybe I was more anxious than him!
I love the idea of a 6th form student helping. The school is 18 miles from home and at present don't know anyone from there who lives near us but maybe a more local school might know of someone.

Ask around at school, another parent may be happy to drop him off at home for petrol money.

Just a thought but is there anywhwere near the bus stop that it would be safe to leave a bike. A friend of mine lives in a semi rural area where the train station is 3 miles away and her year 7 son rides his bike to the station in the morning and chains it up and rides it home in the evening.

Why the 5pm finish? Our schools end at 3:10. And surely an 11-year-old would be ok alone for an hour or two?

It's a 4pm finish and an hours long bus ride.
Thanks everyone. The bus is a school bus and no, I won't be working close to the school. Its in a very remote location with no houses / businesses close by. Yes we thought about housing . Although we have only been her 2 months, its only 100 yards from where we have lived the last 14 years. Like this area and like the school, its just choosing the best option for after school.
Husband gets home very late. Yes little one is 10 - July birthday.
It will be dark. School finishes at 4pm and bus gets back around 5pm.
A cab to work is a good idea. As mentioned there won't be a long gap so sitting in reception could be an idea, thanks. Depends where I end up working as I have been applying all over.
I was wondering if this is a private school given the distance it is away plus the longer hours it is open, but I've just seen a post I'd missed explaining they live in a rural area.

Glad your DS says he'll feel comfortable being at home until you arrive back.

Yes its a private school which finishes at 4pm. Bus leaves at 4:10pm and gets to our town at about 5pm. The location is quite rural.
I'm going to check with the school to see if this years bus routes have changed. Could be closer drop off than I thought. Fingers crossed!
Bike idea is quite good, thanks. I'd feel more comfortable about that than walking. We do actually have good cycle paths round here.
