Summer only car insurance

I have just bought a Smart roadster (don't laugh - it's a bit of fun). I want to insure it for a few months over the summer. The rest of the year it will be garaged, and declared off-road. I would like it insured then for theft. My main car will remain road-legal all year. Does anyone know a reasonable way of doing this? It's like a 'classic car' insurance, in a way, except it's not a classic. Both cars are mine and I can only drive one at a time! Should be easy, but isn't. Any ideas?

Its easy but might be more expensive than you think. As its not a classic, NCB would be important but you have none for this car. Your current insurer might give you a decent introductory NCB so probably the best place to go.

In the past, many insurers would swap between normal cover and laid up cover regularly but the market isn't geared up for this now.

As well as theft, presumably you want fire and accidental damage cover so maybe best and easiest just to leave it as comprehensive all year round.

I agree with rs65. You may find an insurer that uses mileage as a more active rating factor and values the garaging as more secure wins out. Plus you will be building NCB.

Plus on those perfect sunny days out of summer, you can have fun too.
I am just thinking out loud - nothing I say should be relied upon!
I do however reserve the right to be correct by accident.

I just insure my 'summer' car all year round. It rarely gets used October to March.

It's on 5,000 mile a year limit as part of a multicar with Aviva. I seem to recall it cost about £150.

PS. My father loves his Smart roadster - great fun! He also uses it only in the summer.
