Help please!! All e mails disappeared from my in box

Options
Opened outlook today and e mails were there. I was reading some and deleting some but then all of a sudden the whole lot disappeared. I have a new laptop and I'm not used to the touch pad mouse.

Quite often I manage to do things that I don't intend by a wrong move on that! It is probably due to this but they didn't delete as not in deleted items folder. They are not in any of the e mail folders.

Please help. I MUST get them back. Mr Apples did "system restore" to yesterday but no help. He also tried importing from archive files in case they had been auto archived but no.

We don't know what else to try.......

I have Hotmail, Google and Lycos email addresses. I don't know who your emails are with but if you go to the home page, ie Hotmail, and log in there, it's just possible that the emails may be in the 'inbox'. Worth checking anyway.

Not sure what else to try, but good luck.
  • Is this Outlook or Outlook Express?

If the former, click View - Arrange By - Custom... - Filter... - Clear All - OK. Then click View - Arrange By - Current View - Messages.

Do a search of your hard drive for .dbx files - these were outlook box filenames last time I looked.

They might have been dragged/dropped by your sleeve brushing over the fingerpad... I HATE those things!

Do you still see "Inbox" in outlook? If not you've dragged the whole folder... let's hope not into DELETE when the settings are set to empty it when you exit.

    Good luck

Thanks for trying to help me. It is Outlook.
I have followed your steps tried view, custom, filter (which says off next to it) but then once the filter window opens I am not sure what to do..... there is a clear all box at the bottom but it wants you to do something within the window before you can press clear all. The window has tabs across the top (the open one is massages) then there is more choices tab, advanced tab and SQL tab. Within the messages tab it opens on the cursor is flashing in a box "search for the words".

I can't move beyond this step of your instructions. I really need these mails back.

Don't say anything that makes it sound like they may be gone. Sheer panic sets in! I do still see the in box in outlook. When the messages went it said "there are no items in this view" on the page where all the e mails were just a second before! The inbox is still there. It has the new emails in it now that have come thro since the crisis moment.

How do you do a search of your hard drive? Mr Apples would know this but he is at work today.

If you are using outlook express you need to search for *.dbx. If you are using Outlook proper then you need to search for *.pst.

To search, go to Start->Search->Search for files & folders. You'll see the irritating dancing dog on the left. Click the green arrow next to "All files and folders". In 'all or part of the filename' write *.dbx or *.pst depending on your version of outlook. Then clikc the search button and start praying!
  • do you keep them in folders? if so is there a little + next to them?
if so click that and it'll expand the folder and might show your emails.
  • Have you had a look in "Deleted Items" folder in Outlook.
