Automatic family car 3K or less ?

Options
Hi,
Need some advice!
Im looking for an automatic, slightly bigger than my VW Polo, up to maybe 1.6L engine, boot space for dog, 5 door, bit of room in the back seats.
Do a lot of camping/bike rack on the back/3 large 'kids', dog, rural driving/floods/potholes etc.
Which cars should I look at? Got no idea. Id like to keep the running costs and insurance down as low as possible or I wont be able to afford to run it once Ive got it.

Probably best to get an estate car of some sort. If you like your polo then maybe a Passat estate? Or if you want something smaller a golf estate? Don't know how much you'll get for 3K though. and go for the 1.9 diesel if you can

What age/mileage are you hoping for with £3K? Because three grand can buy you a whole lot of different cars but you need to decide a limit on mileage or age, imo.

Don't worry too much about the engine size, some big engines are less inefficient, some small ones have more power than you'd expect because it's a better design. Look at the actual statistics for MPG or acceleration.

    Start here:

Do a basic search just on price - don't select make and model yet.

The next page allows you to refine the search to automatic and the right body style to suit you. You can also set maximum age, mileage, insurance band and road tax. That will give you an idea of what's available in your price bracket.

If you find something you like, see what HonestJohn says about it.

Also check EuroNCAP safety ratings for that year and model. (Well, I always do, but YMMV.)

Focus hatch or a Focus estate. Sorted next?

  • We have a 04 megane auto 1.6l we picked up that has not missed a beat in the 5 years we have had it.

Although at that budget I would suggest an estate too.

  • Thanks for the suggestions, now having a look at some of them.
