History address in the UK shorter than 3 years

Hi There,

This is my first post and I hope to have posted it in the right section.
I have moved to UK 1 year and a half ago, before that I have been living 2 years in the Netherlands, 5/6 months in UK and 25 years in Italy.
I am a full time employee at an University and last month I tried to get a credit card from 2 different banks, but my applications were rejected (just found out that doing the second application was a mistake  ). Unfortunately, I am not able to check my credit score or do eligibility checks seen my UK address history is too short. However, I would like to do so, do you have any idea how to do that?
Furthermore, I would like to get some cards that might help me to increase my credit score, once again, any suggestion? :)

Many thanks for your help guys!! :j

In the UK, it's about building a credit history, rather than a score. The scores are a gimmick, rather than any sort of useful guide. You're right that one of the the best ways to do this is with a credit card.

However, you're only likely to be accepted by one of the sub prime lenders - aqua, Vanquis, Capital One. If rejected by them, you're going to need to give it a few months before trying again.

If successful, make sure you clear the balance in full each month.

Have you tried checking all three credit files - Experian, Equifax and Call Credit?

Thank you very much for your reply!
I have tried with the first two online, not sure what was the problem with Experian, but I think Equifax had some problem accepting my Barclay's debit card details (no idea why, money is there and used it everywhere to buy online). I will try them again and give a try with Call Credit as well.
I have used the quick eligibility on moneysavingexpert and also the Barclaycard Initial had a 80% chance to be accepted (I also got Barclay's invitation to apply for it by post) do you think I should try that first seen Barclay's is my Bank or go straight with sub prime lenders?
Maybe is not important, but just to mention that I have moved to UK (at my actual address) in September 2015, signed my rental agreement in October 2015, open my bank account in October 2015 and registered for voting few months later. Shall I count my time at my address from September or October 2015? or does not make any difference?

Thanks again, really appreciate your answer! :rotfl:

Put September, though a month won't matter.

Try the Bcard Initial. It's another sub prime option.

When my husband moved to UK he got a capital one card within a few months, think he called them and they gave him a low limit to start with. Probably worth calling them :)
