My own luddite attitude to my family history research is to keep everything (subject to copyright restrictions) kept offline, and if necessary, upload a copy of tree data to the internet when needed.

The large corps (not just family history ones) urge us all to keep everything online and in the cloud. But their T&C's and business model requires the customer to keep on handing over cash to access and manage the data you have invested time, money and effort to add.

Keeping you data offline does make it harder to collaborate with other family members, and it does require more effort to download and save information as well as remembering to back everything up. But there are ways around most of the disadvantages of the offline approach, whereas there is no way around the ongoing cost of subscriptions or upgrade fees.

With an offline system you also get to decide when and if you are going to upgrade and can go back if you find an upgrade removes important functionality or scrambles your data. With the online systems you have to accept the upgrade, eventually, even if you are able to defer it for a period of time.

Must go now, I have some of those blasted machines I need to smash :D
