Ahhh. I read it as

"I have an old DVD (RW) disc which has some old video files on it."

and it works on one of my RW disks.

It is a DVD-RW disc. So I tried Piriform Recuva and it gave me an error of "can't find file system".

So looking at the online forum, it states that to get around this, perform a quick format of the disc (which repairs the file system) and then use recuvva again.

So I did this and it recovered the files..... until it got stuck at 61%

Try ISOPuzzle as already mentioned or H2cdimage. Both tools try to recover as much as possible by subsequently running on different Pc's with different CD/DVD drives.
