eBay Compatibility List

Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help.
I have been stung twice now by the eBay compatability chart for car engine parts.
The first item was in January for a Car battery.
Item # 291031009284

I checked, and ebay says it is compatibile with :
VW Golf 2001 MK IV [1997-2006] Hatchback 1.9 TDI 1896ccm 130HP 96KW (Diesel) which is what I have.

It's the wrong battery for my vehicle. After a month of using it normally, it now struggles to start.
Some messages from the eBay email.

Hi,
I bought this battery last month. The car is struggling to start already. I have had my alternator tested and that is ok.
Can you help pls?
Best Regards
Mike

Hi Michael
The battery you bought is to small for your car you need the one below, the eye indicator show charge status
Thank you for your enquiry, I am happy to confirm the correct battery for your vehicle is an 100 type ebay item number: 111232380774

However we do ask customers to double check by comparing against the dimensions in the advert.
if I can be of further help feel free to contact myself.

He simply declined the return request and closed it - Can he do this?
I have no more options via eBay!

It's not the sellers fault, it is eBays fault. You've used it for a month hence you are out of time to open a proper returns case, so the seller can just close the one you've opened.

I think you need to speak to eBay as it is their chart that is the problem, but I am not sure they can do anything?

Well it is fit for purpose, it is a car engine that would work if fitted to the correct car.

    According to this page:
    http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/sell/fitment.html#what

It sounds like its a tool a seller can choose whether to use or not. If so, I'd say any information provided by it would form part of the contract and the seller is liable for its failings (at least to OP, they may in turn have a claim against the service provider).
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

When I have listed car parts the seller has the opportunity to either drill down to individual model or be lazy and just tick overall model. This is 100% the seller's fault but where you go from here ? What date did you pay for the item ?
  • Hi @unholyangel, that's along the lines I was thinking.

Hi @molerat. A google search confirmed this - the drill down CAN be switched off if the seller wants to.
    I bought it on 8th Jan 2017.

I wanted to speak to you guys as a sounding board before I went off to fight my corner! I have been to the C.A.B in the past and didn't have a great experience!
I was unsure who to persue and how. Approaching ebay is a bit David and Goliath - so I need to know my rights before I start.
It's interesting that the seller immediately offered a heavily discounted 2nd product.
I'm now wondering if it's best to persue the seller through the small claims court...
I do appreciate the time people have taken to respond - thanks :)
