Does anyone know if you need a broadcasting licence to have the volume on on a TV that is in a reception area of an office?

You need a TV licence for the premises.

https://www.gov.uk/licences-to-play-background-music perhaps? as the area allows access to 'the public'.jayneclaire23 wrote: »I know we need a TV licence and we have one but i am being told that without a broadcasting licence the tv has to be mute - i just wanted to know if that was the case0 -
We don't play music we just have the news channel on0

The scammers that are PRS and PPL will insist that you need one of their licences even to cover the jingles that are played on adverts and programs! Whether that would stand up in court or not I have no idea. Hopefully not.0

Hi,
a lot of Wetherspoons pubs show news with subtitles, maybe that's a way round it.0 -

As I said above and Mister G points out, PRS will claim that you need one but as I said I'm not sure how that would stand up in court.I think that maybe you do.

PRS and PPL are a complete con. The TV stations and radio stations or someone else further up the chain have already paid royalties. PRS and PPL just want to scam the end users for a second, third, fourth etc time. It shouldn't be allowed but sadly they get away with it.0
