    A quote is fixed.
    An estimate is floating.

However, how much was the quote, how much was the invoice?

Did you think it was a bit adrift?

If I thought they'd forgotten something, I'd cough up. But if the invoice and quote were identical (or near as damn it), I'd argue the toss with them. Or just ignore their letter.

Having now read the whole thread (I must remember to do that before I reply, but I get carried away) ... the issue over them hiring things in - if you weren't aware they were hiring things in, then that's not your problem

e.g. if you were quoted £20 for 20 sandwiches on silver plates .... they can't then say "Oh we had to hire in the silver plates we put them on" and bill you for that.

But if they said "it's £20 for the sandwiches, plus the cost of the silver plates which we will source for you at an extra cost", then that would be your responsibility.

However, this does all sound like it's their fault/their loss.

And they need to learn to be clearer in quote, then clear in their paperwork on deposit and final balance.

    Administrative numpties strike again.

    *rolls eyes*

    Good luck. And sod 'em.

I think the problem arises from the final bill not having an inventory, it was more like 'here's the bill' - which we then paid, as we had paid the deposit etc. But obviously when adding that final bill up they forgot some major components.

Made worse by the fact that they are a nice couple running the company who have only just started out, so not a faceless corporation who we can happily tell the phone monkeys to shove it.

  • While appreciating that they are a small business the issue remains the same in that you agreed a price & paid....adding money on after is simply unacceptable & you should not be penalised for an error they made! At the end of the day its your choie what you do but I wouldnt pay in full...at best I would reach a compromise but simply as a jesture of goodwill. Have they been apologetic about it? If not I wouldnt pay but then thats easy for me (& everyone else!) to say in theory!! Good luck with it! Keep us posted!

They are apologetic about it, but i'm not sure what to do next. A letter/email to them saying that it came as a massive blow and we'll struggle as we have just bought a new kitchen, boiler installation and garden fence all due for payment this October (all of which is true)?

Or ignore the letter and see what happens?

I'd say tough, I paid the price quoted, simple as that. If they had quoted the higher price but invoiced lower then they would have an arguement. But they can't give you a quote then change it a month after the event. Stick to your guns and tell them to take a hike.

    Congratulations by the way :)

    Totally agree.

    Plato ;) Make £2018 in 2018 no. 37 - total = £1626.25/£2018 :j
  • Do not pay anymore money, they quoted you one price and this was agreed, they will have to take this on as a loss. I would put this in writing and send by recorded delivery and ask for a reply within seven days.
