Withdrawing money and passport

Has anyone here had to supply a photographic copy (held on record) of your passport when drawing money from your account?

The sum was £750.

    I haven't, but:

    a) banks and other financial institutions have a regulatory requirement to have identified their customers. Perhaps they had not previously completed that process in respect of your account.

    b) commercially it might make sense to identify the person to whom they're giving money that was in the account, to reduce the risk that the person asking for the money is not the account holder.

So, while it hasn't happened to me, I don't doubt that it could happen, for reasons (a), (b), or perhaps (c): other. What were the circumstances?

Yes I have, and thebank staff know me. If I take out, or bank any large (over £1,000) amount I always bring my passport.

Yes, for a sum over £750, and as per bowlhead99's (a) and (b) options :)

Well, does "held on record" mean that the bank has a copy stored electronically that a cashier can see? If so, how is it worse than the original?
Why can it not be a different photo ID - not the one 'held on record'?
  • The cashier said she wanted to make a copy so I assumed photocopied but it might end up electronic. It was TSB and the branch I use once a month and usually on a weekday.

This time is was Saturday and when I pointed out Im a regular her colleague said maybe she hasn't served you before hence the photo.

I have in the past at various banks flashed my passport on request if I'm drawing more than £500, but it was the first time my passport was copied - just wanted to know if it was some new rule.

No and the problem would be, don't have a passport nor any other form of photo ID. Does this mean I can never access my money via a branch.

How did you open the account without id?

I've opened many accounts without providing id. I'd say over 90% of the accounts I've opened did not require it.

They usually identify people electronically. I have a few dozen UK current and savings accounts, literally all opened online, and never needed to present my passport of other ID at a bank or building society.

Never been asked and lots of accounts. In fact that is not strictly true, I messed up an application for a second Barclay's account and needed to show ID at a branch 50m round trip so told them to forget it.
