If you are short of money or your money could be better spent on more urgent things in your new flat leave well alone.
Just get the carpet cleaned as you suggest.

My advice for laminate (and carpet) is don't buy cheap or skimp on the underlay."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Sorry to see why you're in your situation, hope that improves soon!
As for laminate, I much prefer it to carpet and would also stress to not go for the cheapest. Some of the online suppliers will save money, but maybe only when you order fairly big quantities. So Homebase or B&Q would probably be an easier choice, for reasonable value and you can see it in front of you, rather than pictures, on line, or waiting for a small sample to arrive in post.
As for underlay, again Homebase will let you see the various options, as the stock Vitrex products And there are some with better sound insulation, as well as heat insulation properties, within their range. Avoid the fibreboard stuff that B&Q stock, its dusty to cut and use and a similar price to Vitrex. If you have Screwfix nearby, Vitrex is cheapest there.
As for kitchen, a water resistant laminate would be best.
Bathroom may well be a bad idea, unless you spend a high amount. So maybe vinyl would be a better money saving choice.
