Moving in with boyfriend, our relationship status?

We're moving into a rented property in 2 weeks time and I'm looking for home contents insurance but I'm unsure of what my martial status is or would be classed as.

Am I classed as single because we are not engaged or married (eventually we want to be, just not viable right now for us) or are we classed as cohabiting/common law partners? Do we have to legally make this official or can we just say cohabiting?

Thank you in advance and for your time.

You'll be co-habiting (if that is an option on the form).

Yeah there is, so we don't have to make it legal?

There's no such thing as common law spouses in any part of the UK.

You will be co-habiting if that is an option. (as already said) otherwise you will be single.

It is quite normal and never causes a problem, myself and OH have been living together for best part of 20 years now.

There usually is an option of 'living with partner' .

  • Although there's no such legal thing as common law spouses, I have recently seen it mentioned when filling in online forms, and I imagine it's fine to use if you're simply living together and there are no other suitable options. No need to make it legal.

You check cohabit, and may it all go splendidly.

Just if anyone mentions "Common Law Spouse" depending on how polite you want to be, either say flatly "that status is a Myth" & more dangerous than most little misunderstandings or just smile tolerantly & strike that individual off your Christmas card list let alone when you get around to it wedding list.

Even wikipedia says "this is merely a social usage".

Citizens Advice has a very long page on the differences between married & not & where there are legal patches to bridge the gulf.
Worth reading if you want a map to the potential minefield.

That said, I'll repeat, all the best!
