Joint bills account

Hi there

I'm an avid current account tart having used many to help save the deposit for the house we have now bought!

In the past, because of bankruptcy and DMP, we have kept our finances separate. The thing is we now have a joint mortgage so it seems a good idea to have a joint bank account to use for bills (in the past we have just had a few bills each and that's been fine... but now we have much higher monthly commitments I think having a dedicated bills account would work better.)

I'm thinking of either the Natwest cashback account or the Santander 123 which gives cashback. (we currently have neither of these accounts between us)

A big factor (having used many banking apps now) is that a) we need an account that we can BOTH access through an app (I would expect this if it is a joint account but just making sure!)... and b) I want the app to be as functional as possible for moving money in/out etc and for setting up payments - we rarely use PCs to do banking now if we can help it - M&S being the black sheep of our banking family... their app is useless!

Which of these two accounts would people recommend? Or am I missing another obvious contender? (our savings will be built back up in the other accounts we still hold with TSB, Tesco, Halifax, FD, M&S)

If you use Santander 123, as a 123 World customer you would also each have access to the 5% Regular Saver.

I use the Santander 123 and use the banking app all the time. We have a joint account and my DH does not like using mobile apps but he could if he wanted to. There are certain things you cannot do on the app though like set up new payees etc. Easy to move money around though and pay bills etc. The cashback is good for bills and although they have reduced the savings rate 1.5% up to £20k is better than lots of others.

I don't know anything about the Nat West cashback account.

Aren't NatWest in the process of lowering the monthly account fee as well as reducing the cashback you can earn on your Direct Debits?

I'd recommend Nationwide's FlexPlus. It costs £10 a month, and for what it offers (travel insurance, mobile insurance, vehicle recovery and homestart, ID theft and card protection, white goods extended warranty and fee free foreign transactions) is excellent value, so divided by two of you is even more so. If you're going to make use of the services of course.

You'll both see the account on your apps, but will have separate login information, and any sole accounts are separate too. The app is pretty decent too, and I'd certainly recommend Nationwide for customer service.

The account pays 3% and there is access to the 5% Regular Saver.

Hmm.. I have a 123 Lite account and the mobile app allows me to create Payees etc... Pretty much has all the functionality of online banking...

There is also FlexDirect account which gives 5% interest on 2500 and the 5% regular saver.. If you don't want to waste money on insurance..

Thanks for the suggestion but this would probably not be good value for us as we have many of these elsewhere and don't require some of them.

Thanks but the interest is only for the first year though (had one each in the past!) so not ideal as this account we would be looking to keep long term
