Just run a virus scan and found the 'downloader.trojan' which Norton says can't remove. Their instructions for manually removing it look very daunting to me. Have run the 'trojan remover' prog since which found nothing! Dunno what to do next...can anyone help me please? :-X :-/

Allexie, don't be put of by the "daunting" manual removal, have a go at it, it won't be as bad as it looks. Make sure you print out the instructions before doing things and you could tick off each thing as you do it.Torgwen..........

Go for it Alexie!
Just think - every second you leave it, it's getting it's claws into your files. There's been loads of people posting things like "just had to reinstall Windows" etc.....
If you get stuck, someone on here will help!
I know exactly what you mean about daunting though, it's all strange when you first see the instructions, but half of them won't apply to you and you'll find it a lot simpler than you thought.
Better than buying a new computer!Torgwen.....................

Re-install Windows...OMG...
Feel ill at the thought!
Think I might have got rid of the trojan.... I remembered using something called 'Hijack This' a while ago when I had another prob so thought I'd give it a go before attempting the manual remove thingy. It gave me a log file and the means to kill the dodgy file. Have run my AV again since and nothing showed up this time (phew!)...also the scary 'Virus Alerts' have stopped now, (they were kicking in every minute or so).
Dare I hope that it is really gone...just seemed a bit too easy somehow ???
Fingers crossed anyway...♥♥♥ Genius - 1% inspiration and 99% doing what your mother told you. ♥♥♥0 -
Allexie,
Hope it's gone!
The only thing is, that with one of the trojans I had recently, I had to turn off system restore (which means you lose all your restore points, so not done lightly!) and then I ran AdAware and Spybot in safe mode. That was the only way I got rid of it cos it had kept coming back. I suppose it depends what kind of thing it was.Torgwen.....................

Thanks Fran for your support on this...was really panicking...having a sick computer is as bad as having a sick relative! So far no sign of the little perishers return but its early days I guess. Must admit I forgot about turning off System Restore(!!) and the safe mode stuff but have made a note just in case.
Thanks again, you're a star so feel free to twinkle ;D♥♥♥ Genius - 1% inspiration and 99% doing what your mother told you. ♥♥♥0
