Betfair account hacked-money removed

Hi...I've put this on the matched betting forum but got nowhere...My Betfair account was hacked over Christmas and £1500 was taken and put in a different bank account to mine...After numerous calls and emails to Betfair nothing has been done in over 3 months!

Does anyone on here have any idea what I can do now as getting desperate, and feel getting fobbed off by Betfair, who are a massive company owned by Paddy Power

Thanks

Go to the police and report the theft, then call action fraud.

Who was to blame for the hack?

If your password was weak or not stored safely then it would be your fault.

As Jim says report it to the police as betfair will know the card that has had the money withdrawn to.

Thanks for the replies....My password wasn't weak & had been good enough for 15 odd years of the account...I've been to the police & got a crime number but they seemed less than interested to be honest...What really bothers me is that security won't say where the money has gone, e.g. which bank had my money, and the fact that they paid nearly all my balance to a new withdrawal method without turning a hair ! I need to pressurise them after 3 months but not sure how

They take a long time and are pretty useless, but always an option.

They do not need to transfer it to a bank account, they can withdraw the money by play poker against a friend and deliberately losing their money to their friend

Cheers all, they did withdraw it to a bank though, I saw the transaction before I phoned cs on Boxing Day to report it

It doesn't really how strong a password is if it is stored or used on a computer that in itself isn't very well protected against viruses, malware or hacking.
Do you store the password anywhere and do you have adequate & regularly updated AV & malware protection?

    Indeed...

Using the same password for 15 years is pretty careless! Just takes one data logger to sneak past antivirus/malware protection and they have your login credentials to be used at any point in the future (maybe years later!). Could also be human error by way of telling, or revealing, the password to a friend or family member.

Could also have been a brute force entry method but I'm sure that a website would block you out if 3 or more unsuccessful attempts were made at logging in.... Such a method would only be practical if OP used a very weak password, and even so the thief would need sufficient foresight to actually realise that OP was an easier target than most people! So that's very unlikely.

Maybe also a password reset request and an email account breach? Though given the OP was able to log into the website after the loss of money it does appear that the original password was used to gain entry.

Unless, of course, betfair was truly hacked.... but they wouldn't have targeted a single user and instead would have gone for big money and drained a lot of player accounts; something that betfair would UNDOUBTEDLY have to own up about.

In a nutshell, it does appear to be OP's error on this occasion and, unless they can track down the thief (bank account details alone will not reveal this), then it may need to be written off.

Do you just have one password or do you use the authenticator? Sometthing has is essential now to use.

In fairness if you've never changed your password in 15 years you are not that security conscious. I wouldn't trust a password in 2002 (when the internet was quite new so not as secure as it is now) in 2017.
