Going with unknown company?

Our tariff is up with British Gas.

I had a look at the MSE Energy Club thing & all the cheaper tariff's are from companies i've never heard of before in my life.

Now i'm not sat here thinking BG bring me 'better gas' or whatever but is going with one of these unknowns a bit risky in any way?

Would you go with these unknowns without any worry or would you only stick with one of the big names?

We switched to smaller companies last year and have not had any problems. In fact, Zog, who we switched to for gas, has 1st class customer service as well as good prices.

Who is the unknown company that is being indicated as the best deal for you?

Have you searched to see if there is any comment oin this siteabout them?

If they have really never been mentioned on this ste, then you may entitled to be wary ... although they may just be a brand new authorised supplier to market.

If they are on an Ofgem accredited comparsion site, they are probably legitimate, but you can double check with the Ofgem website if you want to double check they are correctly licensed.

You now have better consumer protection in the domestic energy sector than you do if your broadband provider, telephone provider etc go bust. In the event of supplier insolvency, Ofgem will appoint a Supplier of Last Resort who, based on the GBEnergy default, will continue to offer you your present tariff terms, and protect any credit balance.

  • The energy supplier does not affect the quality of gas or electric you have. An energy supplier is basically just a billing company. The only billing companies I would consider in the energy industry are SSE, EDF Energy, E.ON, British Gas, OVO Energy and Places for People Energy.

Npower, Scottish Power, Co-operative Energy, First Utility and Extra Energy should be avoided if possible.

At the end of day, its all just personal preference. You will read bad reviews about all of them. You will never hear or read about the good things.

Competing for the best buy tables just mean a race to the bottom.

I am with Scottish Power, because I got lucky.
The trick seems to be to get in AFTER a traumatic computer upgrade. You have a better chance the account stays stable, until the next computer upgrade.

As it turns out, Scottish Power allows me to tariff hop as often as I like, and the computer does not mess up. I suspect the automated tariff change is safer, than calling the call centre, where the keyboard moneys can create mayhem because they press the wrong keys.

It is my suspicion that they do hire moneys, who work for peanuts. :D

Anyway, not recommending Scottish Power as such, but it feels better than these best offer are only for new customers merchants.

E.On is "re-assuringly expensive", if you want to go down that route.

I thought Evander was a BIG specialist in doors, and paid over the odds for a side passage door. The idiots just selected a door because it said "external", and now it's falling apart. Call centre monkeys are all the same, big company or small company.

Agree 100% = never heard of Zog when i switched - did a little homework...turned out great.

The so called 'big' companies rely on this to maintain their customer base...it's up to ourselves to make it happen.
  • But until the smaller companies are able to offer the WHD, for some, it is still cheaper to stay with the big 6.

I could get my gas/electric £85 a year cheaper, but then overall, I would be £55 worse off.
