Contents Insurance including Private Storage Cover

Hi All,

We are looking to put a large number of boxes in storage for a long period of time, at the same time as arranging contents insurance (not too bothered around building insurance). I want to get a policy online that covers for both so that ideally I can get cashback as well, however I am unable to find a company that offers contents insurance that includes items in storage.

I'm thinking I might get a policy with a reputable insurance company and call them to see if they are able to add this on as an extra, however all the companies I've been quoted from specifically call out in the policy exclusions that they don't cover items held in storage.

Does anyone have any experience around this and what did they did to get round this? Smart storage told me that they would only accept contents policies as a valid insurance policy rather than a standalone storage insurance cover, however I'm not sure whether that was just their way of getting me to sign up for their mega expensive £5 a week cover.

I had tried searching through the forums already and I have been unable to find an answer but apologies if I missed it. :money:

Does anyone have any experience around this and what did they do?

Most Contents Insurers will add such storage cover on if you ask, but generally only for short periods and it must be standard Contents only, not valuables.

Contact a large brokers such as Towergate or Home Protect to see what is available.

Better to discuss your requirements, as it might be what you are storing needs separate insurance.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

Some insurers can add an endorsement on to your contents policy for items in storage. However, it will likely have a limit, and will only cover some of the incidents that would usually be covered by the contents in your home.
  • Just found this as I'm in the same position. What did you end up doing?
