Zenith solid laminate worktops

Hello all,

We're planning a new kitchen and came across this new type of kitchen worktops called Zenith. It's an ultra slim 12.5 mm solid laminate worktop which is supposed to be waterproof.

As it is new, I'm struggling to find more info about it. I was wondering if any of you have any experience with this type of worktop and could share your impressions with me?

Is really all it promises? Where apart from B&Q could I purchase it from?

Any info would be much appreciated.

Many thanks! wink

Many of us have stood on our worktops at some point -like knocking down spiders webs, or decorating a ceiling. Do you honestly think 12.5mm will cope with this? Also consider cut outs for sinks which weaken worktops - you are left with flimsiness with a 12.5mm. Where one bridges across washing machines even 30mm should receive support at the wall. What chance is there with 12.5mm?

There will be many folks who will disagree here, including the manufacturer Wilsonart. So be it, but in a practical, durable world I would not entertain the product. Even if you are careful and treat the product with kid gloves will your guests, or children, or tenants be just as careful?

    Hi @Furts,

these are all good points to consider, thanks!

I was wondering whether the 'sleek ultra slim'look of it would bear the daily use of a family kitchen.

    What would you suggest instead?

Granite and Quartz are SO expensive! My new kitchen will be fairly big and I am struggling to justify the prices.

Decent laminate worktops have been around for generations. They are as cheap as chips relative to granite and so on. Duropal and others are good, but there is some flimsy thin dross sold in the likes of B&Q so be careful inspecting quality if you choose laminate.

Fitted some Zenith a few weeks back - have to agree - it's not to my liking. It's actually still laminated - a core of plastic with a textured finish to it the same as any laminate worktop!

Cutting needed some consideration as it's very weak once the apertures are removed.
It also caused other problems, such as sink clips not fitting, lack of ability to use bolts to connect mitre joints (you have to glue and use whatever method you can to push/pull up the joints while the araldite sets).
Dishwasher binds against underside of sink clips, so had to be dropped 30mm

IIRC they were also 650 deep - which means too much overhang if you have handleless doors, so it needed cutting down to size also - PITA.
I wouldn't want to stand on them either.
The edges aren't laminated, so any exposed cuts need careful finishing.

If I remember any other issues I'll update this post.
