Old insurance policies

Hi
Hope someone can point me in the correct direction if this is the wrong area.
Was speaking to an elderly aunt last night who is currently in the process of going through very old paperwork, (30 years+) amongst which she has found insurance policies and share certificates. She has no idea what the current status is on any of these, some have been cashed in, but as the last time any transactions were carried out was about the same time as her husband had a serious accident and her youngest was born, she obviously had more important things to worry about.
Is there a relatively simple, MSE, way of getting an update? I realise that after this length of time there will probably be a cost, but would like to keep this to a minimum.
TIA

Contact the insurers and companies involved and take it from their advice if she needs to contact any third party registrars etc.
Should be no cost involved in establishing if shares and policies have any value.
But expect to pay costs for selling shares - Google will show options0 -
There has been a significant amount of consolidation within the life insurance market, so it might be worth googling each of the providers to find out the best contact numbers. I realise this is a bit like sucking eggs, but I doubt the phone numbers on any policy documentation still work.0
