Comparing unit price/standing charge?

Something has been bugging me for a while when comparing tariffs...

Sites only allow you to enter kwh or spend per week/month/year (which is unclear to me at the best of times), would it not be better (and simpler) to compare your unit price and standing charge and just bump to somewhere that is blatently cheaper?

Taking each separately is of no use. Your annual spend is decided by the combination of the 2 and will different for everyone depending on their own individual usage pattern. High usage customers generally benefit from a high standing charge and low unit rate, low usage customers the reverse. If you do not know your annual consumption you are not in control of your use.

Your annual usage is obtainable from your supplier, annual kWh consumption is the only reliable input to use in the comparison sites. Annual / monthly spend will give very misleading results.

true, after looking on my suppliers site i have found my annual usage... when i've put this into the comparison tool the results are almost the same as when i just put in my estimated spend per month but did yield some new results

what would you consider a high and low energy user? my annuals were E:2547 G:6450

Close, but no coconut this time sorry.

It's actually 12,500kWh gas and 3,100kWh electricity. Been this since 1st September 2015.

Absolutely, so I have done my own research

Supplier A charges 11.5p/kWh and 22p der day

Supplier B charges 15.6p/kWh and 12.2p per day

Supplier C charges 20.3p/kWh and zero standing charge.

Which supplier should I choose please?

You are making hard work of this ?

    1) a simple Excel broadsheet - don't forget VAT
    2) any comparison website

But the important research is your consumption in kwh

If you use less than 912kWh a year then C is cheapest, if you use more A is cheapest (by almost £200 at the avearge), B is always in the middle.

It would seem though that the comparison websites ignore the KWH figures you enter and offer a "best" deal based on the officially sanctioned "average" consumption figures.
    It that correct?

My energy provider's website seems to suggest changing to a tariff with higher per unit cost, but lower standing charge. Whereas moneysavingsexpert cheaperenergyclub suggest a tariff with lower unit cost, but higher standing charge.

    So which is right?

Gas: 16000 kwh per year, Elec: 8000 kwh per year

Choice between Scottish Power April 2018 v2 or v4 tariff
