  • Daft question perhaps, but does she have a passport or any kind of photo ID?

  • Well she has little or no short term memory now and I do largely manage her financial affairs for her with her signing documents in the presence of me and one of the other PLAs. I have asked the solicitor to advise us as to when we formally invoke the powers we have under the PLA but would rather leave this until it is absolutely necessary, both to give my Mum some sense of empowerment and also because I know banks and other companies don't always accept PLAs so easily.
  • She certainly had passports but have looked high and low and not found one. She had an old farm driving licence and I can't find that either - dutifully given up and destroyed I supposed when her eyesight went. She does have a bus travel pass I'D but am certain that won't ' be acceptable....
  • Well I am certainly hoping so. If the bank accept the Baptism certificate and marriage certificate then I'll get everything else renamed accordingly and then No nightmare expected when, hopefully in the distant future, it comes to winding up her estate.
  • But I am guessing it is only months or even weeks away. I want to get this sorted whilst she can still sign forms with some understanding about what she is signing.
  • My mother in fact adopted the same practice and I was called by the last of my given names (at least it was still a name on my birth certificate) ....no problem until I applied for a CRB check and profile was flagged up as suspect/fraudulent. Took me a while to sort that one out. :-)
  • Well, how complicated. I've heard of people being called by their middle name, but not of having several choices of Christian names and surnames.

The husband of a former work colleague is called by the the third of his 3 given names as he didn't like the first two. I knew several people (including my late uncle and my grandfather) who are/were known by their second name. My grandfather's death certificate had his given names in reverse order, so his birth and death certificates did not match.

Before WW1 my grandfather was told there should be an extra letter in his surname, so he changed it and both my mother and my other uncle had the the extra letter on their birth certificates. But in the 1930s he was told the extra letter shouldn't have been added so he changed his name back again (It was never changed on his birth or marriage certificates). So my grandparents ended up with differently spelt surnames to their children!

First wife had 3 given names, was known by a truncated version of 1st name which had different initial letter, but coincidentally same initial letter as her 3rd name. Her mother was known by the 2nd of her 3 given names.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

If it's just one bank you have a problem with, then a formal declaration (affidavit or statutory declaration) might be the way to go - setting out the situation. e.g. stating 'at birth I was registered as [name #1]. I was baptised as [name #2] and then married and since that date have used the name [name#3]" - her solicitor should be able to advise on the appropriate wording. Possibly including something along the lines of 'my name was changes by practice and usage to [current name] '

If you think there is more than one, then while she should not need a change of name deed but it may be the simplest way to deal with things, as most banks etc will accept that. (i.e. change from original name to current name) A simple change of name deed (rather than formal Deed Poll) is all you need. If you do the deed with a solicitor then they will normally give you 6 or so certified copies so you can send copies to anyone who needs them, As long as you keep the original you can always get further copies done. Your mum would need to sign the change of name need but it is pretty straightforward.

Don't worry about the marriage, your name is whatever you say it is, and she validly consented to the marriage, so that is not an issue!

Banks and other financial institutions tend to be pretty rigid about what they will or won't accept as proof of ID, and I would be surprised if they would accept a baptism certificate. You may find that it is easier to do a change of name deed than to try to convince them to accept something which is not on their list of acceptable proofs.
All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)

This is peculiar, and no doubt open to abuse.
