Insurance & moving house

We currently have an insurance policy with Churchills. The renewal comes up in a few days time at my current address and it's a content only policy (I'm currently renting).

We move house at the start of May, annoyingly a short time after the 14 day cooling off period. This time we'll be homeowners so will need buildings cover too.

I've got quotes online for buildings and contents cover at £190-200 for the new address from other companies.

I explained the situation to Churchills today and asked them to extend cover here for one month - they refused and insisted it's a whole year policy or nothing.

The problem is Churchills' quote for my new house, building and contents, is £460! A ridiculous amount, especially when I can get cover at the new home for £190 from other companies for the same cover.

Churchills suggested I take their cover out and then pay £35 to cancel the policy when I move and take out another. The new companies don't seem overly wild about me taking a policy out at one address and then changing to another without incurring an admin fee of a similar amount.

So, any other ideas I've not thought of to cover this short amount of time?

    Is the £190 the same level of cover as £460 cover (have you compared them line by line)?

    Is it possible to take out the cheaper policy if you want that one and just get it to start earlier - have to check if there is any liability issue if the sellers want to claim on their insurance while you are insuring the house

    Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

    People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

    Can the £190 insurer cover contents only at your current address and then do a change of address and cover to the £190 price?

    It's unreasonable to expect that for free or without admin charges.

    Your options are;

    - Renew with Churchill at the current address, changing the address when you move.

    - Renew with Churchill at the current address, cancel when you move and take out a new policy elsewhere.

    - Take out a new policy at your current address with a different provider, and change the address when you move.
