    Interesting read.
I've been having a go at that McCain one 'cos we use oven chips, haven't had so much as a sniff of a win in that comp. It is a bit disheartening when you put lots of codes in and you don't get anywhere. I know that it's the luck of the draw, but with that amount of 'prizes', you'd think you'd have a good chance of hitting a decent win. I'm glad that I'm not one of those who isn't obsessed with buying every product that advertises a comp, I'd be skint :D
BTW, I can't be the only one who doesn't agree with having to keep the receipt after entering a comp, when the promo code is inside packaging, and can only be used once. It's one of my pet hates about comping. (whinge over :D)

This article has made me think how ridiculous it is, you'd expect more certainty and more of a reward from purchase comps

The Jarlsberg cheese one is certainly a swizz - besides it being very unlikely that you'll hit a winning moment, it's being incorrectly advertised - clearly says on the website and packaging and advertising that there are '100's of gift cards every hour' to be won - which is a complete lie if you read the T&C's. https://www.winwithjarlsberg.com/

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!

Yeah there are more and more companies that are doing this, think mattesons recently did something similar with ps3s and gaming computers etc.

Wouldn't have quite the same impact if instead of saying staying

    "£3m prize fund"

McCains went with the equally truthful

"£150,000 worth of prizes expected to be won".

(What I don't like about the McCains one is how messy it is getting at the codes)

Lol, it's a bit greasy isn't it? I cut the codes off the packet and throw the rest away (after I've swept up all the little flakes that seem to float out of the packs.

I've been entering the current Jacobs Creek win a dinner one which is the same. Advertised as 1000's of £40 vouchers to be won but most probably won't be.
  • When they run these 'Winning Moment' competitions people used to think that meant entering at the correct 'winning second' to win.

In reality you have to enter at the exact 'NANO-second' to win.
  • I always avoid IWs for this exact reason and only go for purchase comps based on Prize Draws. I only enter if it's literally something I need to buy, whereas for the latter it's worth making the trip for, the larger the prize pool the better.

The biggest annoyance is when promoters chop and change the type of mechanic they are using, that's what lures even some of the compers into a comp that isn't all it seems.

Take walkers last year. They ran the great #GameReady comp. It was codes, it was winning moments but you didn't have to enter on the nano-second it was the first entry after the 'moment' that won so all prizes were given out and most people won lots (granted, not high value prizes).

They then ran the 20,000 holidays comp. Those who won lots on #GameReady thought this would work the same and they'd be a shoe-in to win a holiday. What was it, only 1000 got given away?

Onken ran a fab comp last year - win £500 of kitchenaid/joseph joseph equipment. Everyone that entered a code got entered into the draw for that hour and someone would win the bundle. All prizes given away.

This year? It's win 1 of 50,000 Nutribullets and only something like 500 will be given away. Surely a 'win 1 of 500 Nutribullets' where they are all getting given away comp would still be pretty darn attractive to enter?
