And read the paperwork bit carefully. The receipt, signed with date and time noted by both parties is important, in case the new owner starts racking up tickets the minute he drives away. ;)

Also - don't give the new owner the V5. You give them a little slip, then you send another part to the DVLA and the new owner gets a full new V5 in the post. Don't let them talk you into them taking it or anything. The V5 has instructions on it about what to do. Read it through before the buyer comes round.

Or just do the keeper transfer online, and then there is no issue with timing as it takes place instantly and new keeper normally receives their V5 within a couple of days.

New keeper then uses V5C/2 reference number to tax the vehicle and leaves.

How about getting him to BACS £1 now so the payee is set up and on a sample transaction you get an idea if its instant or not ?

If he changes his mind and doesnt buy, give him a £1 coin back on the day?

I sold a car this way a couple of years ago.

The lad who bought it was coming a very long way on the train so he put a pound into my account a couple of days before he made the trip. Both the pound and the 3k he paid for the car went through instantly.
