simple!
just avoid the capital! been doing that nearly my whole life! done alright so far!
as its been said before! its just an excuse to hike taxes!
if it was all about pollution and not revenue they'd ban all vehicles except buses.
but then the place would grind to a halt! not a bad thing really! hehe!0 -
You seem to be saying that nobody will change their car, and everything carries on like nothing has happened.
I saw all this coming, and changed from a 1.5L diesel to a petrol four years ago. March 2013. In April 2016, I got a petrol electric hybrid.
No. I'm saying its not the disaster for most people that is being suggested. And if it does apply, simply ensure that you change your car at some point before then and get something that qualifies for the lower rate.
This doesnt seem difficult?
Hybrid is probably the way i'd look if i was doing big miles again or commuting in to one of the affected areas. Which fortunately i'm not for the forseeable future. So will stick to my petrol guzzling cars which surprisingly have turned out to be good for the environment.
I can see the wailing of gnashing of teeth coming, because I already get resentment because the pure electric owners believe I shouldn't be using "their" charging points, because I can carry on with petrol. When it's one charging point and three pure electric cars, that argument won't work: expect really creative excuses:
I really need to pick up my child from school.
I have a hospital appointment.
Before it gets physical.
More charging points perhaps?
Also i wouldnt be buying a hybrid or a range extender type car on the basis that i needed to charge it up during the day to get home, i'd charge it overnight and take the small hit on the fuel consumption and let them have their bunfight among themselves over the charging point.
If they cant get to and from work on one charge, then they havent bought the right car....0 -
Very much in favour of reducing pollution and restricting driving in cities generally, but this scheme doesn't seem well thought out.
I work in Manchester city centre and they are quite car averse but have done so with high city centre parking charges and a decent public transport system.
I think councils who see this as a quick money grab exercise but havent the public transport system to support it will come unstuck very quickly....0 -

I think its banal to commute in to a city every day. Its never cheap to park and theres usually alternatives.
Likewise if you need to travel in on occasions, ensure you have the "right" vehicle for doing so going forward.0 -
Stupid rules and like said by many others a complete joke, as if banning petrol cars will somehow alleviate the enormous pollution caused by manufacture of vehicles regardless of their fuel type. Or the air pollution caused by buses, taxis, trucks/lorries etc which I assume are all exempt from this anyway.
Just a way to increase tax.
But to be honest in London I don't see why anyone would need to drive regularly, given the quality and efficiency of public transport there. Although the Cambridge council here is considering doing the same thing... which would be awful because we really don't have decent public transport here.0 -
TESCO Neasden used to have cheap petrol, about 2~3p cheaper per gallon, and there were queue jumpers and bloody noses. Lets see all these Nissan Leaf drivers kill each other for the chance to charge up so they can get home.
Your saying people were fighting over petrol being 0.44 - 0.66p per litre cheaper?. I really can't beleive that at all!.0 -
The measurements that they are using to inform these decisions show that pollution by oxides of nitrogen in large city centres have actually been steadily falling by between half of a per cent and one per cent per year.
Except in London.
Also, one analysis of gases per vehicle as they passed, combined with other statistics estimated that the proportion of total NOx in the air due to the oldest diesel vehicles, Euro 3 standard and older, is less than more modern ones. This tends to imply that the owners of the older vehicles use them proportionately less, or that the number of such vehicles is gradually reducing as they get old and are scrapped.
In other words, things would probably continue improving even without special measures, but of course there will be confirmation bias as the subsequent improvement will be claimed afterwards to show the changes were a success.
Except in London?0 -
Do think it's completely ridiculous that people living in the congestion zone get a 90% discount off all three charges. £3 per day is nothing to someone who can afford to live in London. There should be no discount at all unless someone has a special disability vehicle.Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0

I was there.
An old guy confronted the young queue jumper, who head butted him. The girl driver, who was queue jumped, was stuck, and just sat there, petrified.
Somebody went to the kiosk to tell them to call the police, and the clerk who came out was mates with the queue jumper, who filled up, whilst staring down everyone present, and then drove off.
By the way, this was near Stonebridge Park, which had a Brent (London Borough of) sponsored "community centre", where stabbings on Club nights happened quite often.0 -

Pincher doesnt seem to have much luck - when he tries to put petrol in his hybrid, theres fights, and when he tries to charge his hybrid theres fights too. :eek:0
