Essentially I used to have a HP Micro Server (see left of picture; https://itcrashed.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/dsc_0391.jpg). This worked well, and came with in-built raid software that would mirror the drives, and ensure redundancy of data.

It was however limited - particularly in terms of hdd size (2tb from memory). I decided to upgrade to the N54L (right side of picture) - and install Windows Server 2012 Evaluation version (I cant remember if standard, or other version). This has since handled increased hdd capacity, and allowed for mirroring of the drives so that if one fails - I do not lose my media (pictures, movies, documents, music, etc).

I have been able to extend the evaluation license using the command (slmgr.vbs -rearm). This worked for several iterations; but I have now reached the limitation imposed by MS.

I don't 'think' the drives are encrypted - maybe the suggestion of pulling out into a caddy to check is a good idea.

I have close to 8TB of data - so backing up hour by hour will literally take months.
To Stooze or Not To Stooze - Theres only one option :D

Have you followed the instruction in post #8? That way we'll know the edition and you'll be able to convert it from the evaluation version.
Once there, we can move to activation.
Hurry up, as i'm travelling soon and need to prepare. :)

Pricy147, both hardware and software raid each have different advantages and disadvantages. From what i have read one of the best non commercial server storage setups is ZFS on linux, thanks to Netapp's considerably generous code contribution from about a year ago.
