Anyone had experience of complaining to an insurance company?

We are nearing the end of a very stressful claim on our home insurance whereby we feel that things were not handled as efficiently as they could have been and which involved us having to do all the chasing and a lot of time being wasted while we lived in difficult circumstances having declined alternative accommodation, under the impression it would be for a much shorter, tolerable period. Ok, maybe par for the course, who knows as its our first ever claim.
My question is, has anyone ever used an insurance company's own complaints procedure and did it feel worthwhile? I'm not particularly talking about financial compensation, just a recognition of the unnecessary strain we have been put through.
I'm aware of the Financial Ombudsman route which could take place further down the line but just seeking views as to whether it's worth putting ourselves through further stress.

Just write a letter detailing your complaint and what outcome you want. Keep it concise. No stress involved.0
