It's always been safe up to the FSCS limit, currently £85,000.

I applied for this tonight and had the following at the end of the application - is this normal and how long does it normally take to open one of these current accounts?

We just need to carry out some additional checks to complete your application.

We'll be in touch within 5 working days with more information.

Yes, I had that with my first one, whilst there was no problem with the wife's one or with the second one I applied for later. They didn't come back within the five days either, but when I phoned them they said it was gong through fine and I would get my card and PIN in the next few days.
Retired at age 56 after having "light bulb moment" due to reading MSE and its forums. Have been converted to the "budget to zero" concept and use YNAB for all monthly budgeting and long term goals.
  • Ah right - so you just signed up again and all was okay?

Sorry, wasn't sure from your post if your original application also went through...

    Thanks!

But the account had been open for 3 years so people had plenty of time to sort it. The guarantee and MSE promotion just opened some people's eyes to it.

Of course, but people who don't use sites like this or weren't looking for a new account, would be unaware of the 3% offer and I was pointing out that MSE couldn't be wholly blamed for publicity, as Tesco took out it's own, before the MSE programme went live.

Doubtless that is the reason for the changes. Folk not using the account for its intended purposes. All thanks to MSE heralding the terms prior to the new ones.

My two accounts are indeed used for the intended purposes, as they were 3 years ago when they were first available. Everyone had access to the account and account information via MSE and other means prior to the recent MSE TV publicity, so plenty of time to get things sorted :);)

No one knows, and if someone gets a letter, it will be posted on the forums soon enough and likely make the MSE headline news too.
