Cancelled car insurance but still taken out

Hi all..

I am currently on holiday. I checked my bank account and it shows that my old car insurance company.. Admiral.. have taken out a renewal car insurance cost for the year even though I called and cancelled before I went away.

I am now over my overdraft with bills going out as we speak. Currently it's put me over just shy off £900. Not only this but my bank will start charging me as off 11.45pm tonight if I do not get it back. This is another £5 a day.

I called and cancelled this due to them being far too expensive (I had to claim) and the lady on the phone said this was all sorted their end.

I'm not stuck abroad with no money to pay for my hotel.. taxi to the airport etc. I don't know what to do to sort this out as I know they can take anywhere up to 10 days to put money back in.

Please help :(

Ring your bank, explain as you did above to them in your post. Ask to dispute the payment and ask they raise it as a chargeback. And politely, but firmly ask they put the money back in the account immediately. (bearing in mind it's not the banks fault, so be nice)
  • Hi.

Thanks, luckily I'm an advance customer with my bank so I called them this morning. They told me to call back when it was 8am in the UK for the department I needed. They have logged the call and said once the issue has been resolved they can see if they can sort out the £5 a day charge.

I've looked online and it seems this has happened to a few people with this company. Just got to hope I can clear this money asap as I have to check out in under 24 hours.

Frustrated I have to call from abroad when this is their error. I don't know if that's something I could claim against?

Fingers crossed it's easily resolved. Not a great situation to be in!

might also be useful to have the details of your replacement policy ready for when you complain to the insurance company to add to the evidence of their error....you would not go and buy insurance elsewhere unless you were not taking the renewal

How long before the renewal date was it when you cancelled the renewal?

The same thing happened to me (with a different insurer), when I cancelled a renewal the day before it was due to happen. They accepted the cancellation, but said it was too late to stop the DD going through - so refunded it a few days later.

But they did warn me about this when I called to cancel. Did the agent you spoke to specifically say the payment would/wouldn't be collected?
  • I called on the 3rd March..

Just spoke to someone now.. she was extremely rude and quite agressive however I explained I was stuck abroad so they are going to send me the money back today by 5.30pm UK time so that is a good result!

They are going to listen to the call to check as well.

Annoyed they still took it but they recognised I was in trouble abroad.
  • Success! Got all my money back! Thanks for everyone help!
  • long shot here, claim costs back for calling the incompetent insurers?

Ah Admiral, yeah I cancelled with them and they sent letters after the renewal date saying I owed them money. Then another letter saying a admin charge and debt recovery was going to take place. I sent them a polite but get lost letter.

I have not heard from them since and think they are just chancing as a % of people will pay what they are asking.
