For anyone who was with the juddering thread then that problem appears to have been fixed, thankfully. New MAP sensor, new plugs, new coilpack. So far so good.
I noticed a lot of mayo under the oil cap yesterday. Now before anyone instantly suggests head gasket....
remove the engine cover & you're left with that plasticy rubbery surround to the cap that you can remove, the cap itself & then the engine obviously.
I removed that rubbery surround & it was full of yellow gunk, however there was no gunk in & about the engine side of things.
As i say, before head gasket is instantly suggested, we had this thing with the previous car which was a 2002 1.2 Vaux Corsa & it was forever gunked underneath ...... for the full 4-5 years of owning the car. So unless the head gasket was on its way out & clinging on for 5 years.....
Anyway i was told for that it was just condensation with the short journeys & perfectly normal for that engine.
I'm just wondering if the same applies for the 1.6 16v Golf. It's also mainly used for short journeys. I do oil changes every 6 months on this car.

Shouts short journeys and a lack of servicing to me. Unless its a common
engine for gasket failures.
Even then i assume neglect first.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Well it had no service history when we picked it up really. Got it early 2015 & since then I've done the filters every 12 months except oil change & filter which I do every 6.0

Keep an eye on the water level. If this doesn't drop its likely to be condensation in the engine. Regular servicing won't prevent this but will remove contaminated oil.0

+1
Watch the water level, and if the engine is otherwise running fine, i wouldnt get too hung up on it.0 -
Have an Abarth 500 which mayo's bad in the winter. Misses uses it to travel to work, a whole 3 miles. In the summer it's not too bad.
It does get a good run every other week though.0 -
