We have beech tops, now in their 30th year, still look good, though now needing complete sanding back and re-finishing. This will be the second complete re-finish since new, but I have oiled them inbetween that.

I am good at wiping up spills and using a mat or pot stand to protect them, if you have anyone in the family who would not do that then think again.

Ours are Danish Beech from Junkers and were quite expensive 30 years back, now they are very reasonably priced from Ikea, but I have a couple of theirs elsewhere in the house and they are not of a comparable quality, and do not take such a good finish.

Where did you find such a sink? This is how sinks used to be, and there was never this problem, so I would be interested in finding out where you got yours.

Have you looked at catering type sinks?

I believe sit on sinks are still available, but catering ones will be larger and more substantial.

Ikea! I couldn't find one elsewhere that I liked as much and at £175 for a double ceramic sink, I was very happy with the price. I can't see the one we have on the UK Ikea website at the moment (it's the double Domsjo) but this is it: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/images/products/domsjo-double-bowl-apron-front-sink-white__0457518_PE604969_S4.JPG

They only updated it recently so I doubt it's discontinued.

How wide is it and how deep? I'm having a 900 mm deep worktop on this part of kitchen.

    Also where is draining board?

It is for a standard depth worktop, fits above an 80cm wide unit. No draining board - I use the other side of the sink if I need to or you can get free-standing draining racks with a base. Ikea does wall cupboards with draining racks in the bottom too, I'm sure other companies have similar.

I think the type of sink is called on-set or sit-on (they sit on the worktop either side rather than being set into a continuous piece). You could try googling that with the size you need.

I really have no idea what worktops to get.

    Has anyone tried Duropal?

They come in 4 metre lengths.
I need one piece that is fairly standard (600 mm dept just under 3000 mm length).

The second piece is the one causing the problem as it is 3900 mm long x 900 deep.

Either I spend a great deal getting something made with a template (I've had quotes for £4,200 for granite and a similar price for Corian.

I will ring John Lewis tomorrow to get a Corian quote from them, but in the meantime I've found Duropal laminate which seem to have really good reviews, and for a fraction of the price.

    Confused!
